Best Pokémon Fan Games: 12 Finished Games Worth Your Time

The best Pokémon fan games aren’t ROM hacks. They are complete PC games, almost all built with RPG Maker XP and the Pokémon Essentials kit, so you don’t need a Nintendo cartridge, an emulator or a patcher. You download them, extract the folder and play.

Start with Pokémon Infinite Fusion if you want the one everyone talks about: fuse any two Pokémon and take the result through Kanto, Johto and the Sevii Islands. If you want a new region and a new story instead, Pokémon Uranium and Pokémon Tectonic are both finished and are good places to start.

How we picked

  • Every game is in Pokepatched’s fan games catalog, which lists over 300 of them.
  • We favoured games marked completed, so you get an ending. The one exception, Rejuvenation, is flagged clearly.
  • The list mixes styles on purpose: fusion, open world, hard mode, story-first and roguelike. Twelve near-identical “new region” games wouldn’t help you choose.
  • Versions and features come from each game’s catalog entry. Check the game’s own page before you download, because fan games update often.

The big three

Pokémon Infinite Fusion

Infinite Fusion’s idea is simple: combine any two Pokémon into one, with its own sprite, typing and stats. The fusion system is what people come for, but there is a full game around it, with 16 badges across Kanto, Johto and the Sevii Islands, plus quests and several game modes.

It is also one of the easiest fan games to get running. It is completed, regularly updated, and the fusion experiments mean that no two runs play the same.

Best for: replay value and building teams no official game allows.

Pokémon Uranium

Uranium is one of the longest-running Pokémon fan games. It is set in the Tandor region with over 150 original species and a new Nuclear type, across 13 towns and eight Gyms. Side quests and online trading round it out.

If you want a fan game that feels like a “real” new generation, with new Pokémon rather than a remix of old ones, this is the classic choice.

Best for: a full new region with its own Pokédex.

Pokémon Tectonic

Tectonic is built around team building. Its region, Makya, is nonlinear. Many Pokémon have been rebalanced and there are regional forms, so familiar species can surprise you. Underneath it is a story about Team Chasm’s past.

It is the pick for players who find the official games too easy and want battles where team choices actually matter.

Best for: strategic battles and rebalanced Pokémon.

Huge Pokédexes and long adventures

Pokémon Mauve

Mauve puts over 1,065 Pokémon into one game, with regional forms, Mega Evolution and Dynamax all available. The Ombrosia region spans three time periods, with quests and puzzles along the way.

Best for: catching everything, including later-generation mechanics.

Pokémon Opalo

Opalo is a completed game with two new regions, 16 Gyms, 24 regional forms and a 928-Pokémon roster, finished off with a Battle Front. It was originally made in Spanish and also has an English version.

Best for: a long, traditional Gym adventure, twice over.

Pokémon Gadir Deluxe

Gadir Deluxe is set in a region inspired by Cádiz in southern Spain. Every species is catchable, alongside regional Gadir Pokémon, and there is a roguelike mode and a substantial post-game.

Best for: players who want plenty to do after the credits.

Different ways to play Pokémon

Pokémon Keishou

Keishou plays more like an open-world survival game. You explore Kyujitsu Island, challenge its clans instead of Gyms, craft your own supplies and take on raid battles.

Best for: exploration-first players who are tired of linear routes.

Pokémon Tower of Ashes

Tower of Ashes is a roguelike. You climb a dark tower with over 100 Pokémon, collect more than 60 passive relics and fight strong bosses along the way. Runs are short enough to replay.

Best for: quick sessions and roguelike fans.

Pokémon Giovanni Origins

You play as Giovanni. The game goes back to an older Kanto and Johto to show how Team Rocket’s leader got there, with boss fights, side quests and hidden battles.

Best for: fans who know Kanto inside out and want a new angle on it.

Hard mode and challenge runs

Pokémon Bushido

Bushido is a complete game of about 10 to 15 hours. HMs are replaced with katana techniques, Shadow Pokémon appear, and characters talk mid-battle. Pokémon run through Generation VIII.

Best for: a finished story you can complete in a weekend.

Pokémon Abstract Version

Abstract Version is open world. Four provinces can be explored in your own order, levels scale to match, and difficulty modes let you choose how hard it gets. It also adds new Pokémon and Mega Evolutions.

Best for: choosing your own route without falling over- or under-levelled.

The long one that isn’t finished yet

Pokémon Rejuvenation

Rejuvenation is the exception to our “completed” rule, and it is labelled that way on purpose. Its current release covers chapters 1 to 15. It has all 898 Pokémon from its era, Field Effects that change battles, Crests, 18 type-themed Gyms and a dense, story-heavy plot.

It is long and demanding, and it is still being added to. Play it if you want depth and don’t mind an ending that isn’t written yet.

Best for: players who want the most story and the hardest boss fights.

How to play these on PC, Android and Mac

Fan games don’t need an emulator or a patcher:

  1. Download the game from its Pokepatched page. Fan games usually come as a .zip or .rar.
  2. Extract the whole folder to somewhere like Documents. Don’t run it from inside the archive.
  3. Windows: open Game.exe. Android: install JoiPlay with its RPG Maker plugin and add the folder. Mac: use Whisky or CrossOver to run the Windows version.

Every game page has its own “How to play it” guide with fixes for the common problems: missing files, SmartScreen warnings and where to find your saves.

Fan games versus ROM hacks

If you would rather play on a handheld or a GBA emulator, ROM hacks are the other half of the hobby. Start with our best Pokémon ROM hacks. If you want to browse everything instead, the full Pokémon fan games list shows completed games first.
