Why fan games feel different from ROM hacks
ROM hacks are limited by the game they are built on. Even the most ambitious FireRed hack is still drawing a Game Boy Advance screen and running Game Boy Advance code.
Fan games aren’t limited that way. Because they are built in RPG Maker XP, creators can add things the old cartridges could never hold. Our catalog includes games with voiced dialogue, branching choices, relationship systems, crafting and full Pokédexes through Generation 9. Some are better described as RPGs that happen to star Pokémon: Pokémon Infinite Fusion lets you fuse any two species, and Pokémon Tower of Ashes is a roguelike tower climb.
The trade-off is that they mostly run on PC. That is what the platform label on each page tells you.
Finished games versus ongoing projects
Most of the fan games here are marked completed. The rest are demos, betas or chapter releases that the creators are still adding to.
Both can be worth playing, but they are different commitments. A completed game has an ending. A beta might stop mid-story, and a new version can sometimes break older save files. Each game page shows its status and version at the top, so you know which one you are getting before you download.
How to play them
Every fan game page has a “How to play it” guide. The short version:
- Download the game from one of the links on its page. It is usually a .zip or .rar of a few hundred megabytes.
- Extract the whole folder somewhere you can write to, such as Documents. Don’t run it from inside the archive.
- On Windows, open Game.exe. On Android, add the folder to JoiPlay. On Mac, run it through Whisky or CrossOver.

Common questions
- What is the difference between a Pokémon fan game and a ROM hack?
- A ROM hack is a patch applied to an existing Nintendo game, so you need your own copy of that game and an emulator. A fan game is a separate PC game built from scratch, usually in RPG Maker XP with Pokémon Essentials. You download it and run it directly.
- Do I need an emulator to play Pokémon fan games?
- No. On Windows you extract the download and open Game.exe. On Android, JoiPlay with its RPG Maker plugin runs most Essentials games. On a Mac you need a Wine-based tool such as Whisky or CrossOver.
- What is the best Pokémon fan game to start with?
- For something finished and polished, Pokémon Infinite Fusion, Uranium, Tectonic and Mauve are all marked completed in our catalog. If you want a long, story-heavy game and don't mind an ongoing project, Rejuvenation is the usual pick. Our best fan games guide compares them.
- Can I play Pokémon fan games on iPhone?
- Generally no. RPG Maker XP games need a Windows runtime, and there is no equivalent of JoiPlay on iOS. A handful of projects ship their own mobile builds, so check the creator's page.
- Are Pokémon fan games legal?
- They are unofficial, non-commercial projects that use Nintendo's characters, and Nintendo has asked for some to be taken down in the past. They are free and contain no Nintendo game code. Pokepatched links to downloads published by their creators and hosts no game files.
