About Pokemon Emerald Kaizo
Itemless battles and six-Pokémon Gym Leader teams make this a far tougher take on the original Emerald campaign. Pokémon Emerald Kaizo is a completed GBA release hack of Emerald by SinisterHoodedFigure. It avoids excessive grinding while changing movepools for most Pokémon and making all 386 obtainable. Legendary event tickets, purchasable evolution stones, and revised methods for Slowking, Huntail, Umbreon, and Espeon evolutions change progression. Hoenn starters can also be found in Ever Grande City, adding another team-building option to the challenge.
What's in it
- Removes the need for excessive grinding.
- Prevents item use during battles.
- Gives Gym Leaders teams of six Pokémon.
- Makes all 386 Pokémon catchable.
- Changes movepools for most Pokémon.
- Adds event tickets for Legendary Pokémon.
- Lets you buy evolution stones in Fallarbor Town.
- Makes Slowking and Huntail evolve with a Water Stone.
- Makes Umbreon and Espeon evolve with Moon and Sun Stones.
- Places Hoenn starters in Ever Grande City.
Pokémon Emerald Kaizo is SinisterHoodedFigure's punishing hard-mode rewrite of Pokémon Emerald. It keeps the Gen III battle rules but removes bag-item use in fights, so success depends on preparation, held items, and knowing when a boss battle is coming.
Base ROM: Pokémon - Emerald Version (U).
Before you patch
- Start with Pokémon - Emerald Version (U). The official Romhacking.net download is a patch-only RAR containing
Pokemon - Emerald Kaizo.ips; the creator’s instructions refer to Lunar IPS. - Heal before battles: bag items are disabled in battle, while held items remain allowed.
- This stays on Gen III battle mechanics: there is no physical/special split and no Fairy type.
What to expect
- The creator says wild-Pokémon grinding and EV grinding are unnecessary; cheap Rare Candies are available just before the Elite Four. That does not make the League forgiving: the level curve is designed to prevent a large level advantage there.
- Some encounters, berries, and routes are gated late. Berries cannot be harvested until postgame, and some Pokémon and legendary-event access require clearing the game.
- The official thread includes three movepool text attachments. It also notes that fuller evolution, ability, and stat documentation was still pending.
Version history
- v2.1 — 14 March 2020. The creator’s thread records a Version 2.0 fix for a potential softlock near Altering Cave. It also warns that a few move descriptions were not updated and mentions a trainer-battle graphical bug, but says no crash or corrupted-cry bugs had been reported.
