About Pokemon Monster Hunter Emerald
More than 100 Monster Hunter creatures replace every Pokémon encounter in Pokémon Monster Hunter Emerald. TheNadei's completed 1.0 GBA hack of Emerald is in English and gives each monster custom front sprites, Shiny sprites, and team icons. It adds the physical/special split, new moves from later generations alongside original moves, and revised move balance. Item names and icons are adapted to the Monster Hunter setting, while two types receive extra resistances. Level caps guide progression.
What's in it
- Uses level caps for balanced progression.
- Adds the physical/special split.
- Replaces all Pokémon encounters with more than 100 Monster Hunter creatures.
- Gives every monster custom sprites, Shiny sprites, and team icons, without backsprites due to sprite limits.
- Renames items and updates their icons to fit the Monster Hunter setting.
- Adds moves from later generations and original moves.
- Rebalances moves around modern power levels.
- Adjusts the type chart, giving two types new resistances.
A Pokémon Emerald conversion that replaces its encounters with more than 100 Monster Hunter monsters while retaining Emerald's original story structure. The trade-off is that several optional modes are unsupported and may expose original Pokémon or bugs.
Base ROM: 1986 Pokemon Emerald Trashman (U).
Before you patch
- Use the creator-linked IPS patch, not a pre-patched game. The official release thread links the 952 KB
Pokemon - Monster Emerald Version (U).ipsfile on MediaFire. - The creator specifies 1986 Pokemon Emerald Trashman (U) as the required base ROM. They also link RomPatcher.js for applying the patch.
- Keep the documentation spreadsheet handy: the creator describes it as the general introduction and reference for the game’s information.
What carries over from Emerald
The original Emerald story structure remains in place, with minor additions, so this is better treated as a roster conversion than a new-region adventure. The creator also leaves 999 Rare Candies in the PC for optional faster levelling and recommends changing teams around.
Plan around the unsupported side content. Battle Frontier and breeding are playable but not supported, and may show original Pokémon or bugs; rebattles and the Trick House after its first room have the same caveat.
Monster upgrades that do not map neatly to normal evolution use five Evolution Stones. Their Market availability unlocks at different points, while standard evolutions remain for applicable monsters.

Pokemon Monster Hunter Emerald: common questions
- Does Monster Hunter Emerald tell a new story?
- No. The creator says the Pokémon Emerald story and its connected content remain the same, apart from minor additions; the main change is the monster roster.
- Which ROM do I need to patch?
- The official release post specifically asks for "1986 Pokemon Emerald Trashman (U)" as the base ROM. Use that named dump rather than assuming another Emerald revision will work.
- What patch format is the official download?
- The creator links an IPS file, "Pokemon - Monster Emerald Version (U).ips", and points players to RomPatcher.js to apply it.
- Can I use the Battle Frontier, breeding and other optional Emerald content?
- They are not supported. The creator warns that Battle Frontier and breeding can reveal Pokémon or bugs; the same warning applies to the Trick House after room one and to rematches.
- How do Monster Hunter-style evolutions work?
- Five Evolution Stones replace several standard evolution stones. They become available through Markets at different points in the game, while ordinary evolutions still exist for other monsters.
