About Pokemon Too Many Types

Pokémon Too Many Types is a completed GBA hack based on Emerald. It is version 1.6 and credits Kobazco, marinepez, and CannonsCreative as its creators. The project was commissioned by Alphared. Pokémon Too Many Types uses Emerald as its base game and runs on the GBA platform. Its title and completed status identify this as a finished project from those credited creators.

◆ POKEPATCHED NOTES

Too Many Types reworks Pokémon Emerald battles around a 62-type chart and changed Gym and Elite Four teams. Its trade-off is deliberate unfamiliarity: most ordinary trainers use scaled randomised teams, so standard Hoenn matchup knowledge is much less dependable.

Base ROM: Pokémon Emerald (US) — a clean dump has CRC32 1F1C08FB.

Before you patch

  • Use a clean Pokémon Emerald (US) ROM. The creator’s instruction is simply to apply the patch to that base; the thread does not identify a revision number.
  • Try mGBA first if it crashes. It is the emulator the creator says works best.
  • Keep the official documentation open. The linked spreadsheet includes a type chart, Pokédex, boss-fight and move tabs — particularly useful because the type system and move typings have been changed.
  • Use the creator’s stated official sources. Kobazco identifies this PokéCommunity thread and the Alpharad Discord as the only official places to obtain the project. A qualifying patch-only download could not be verified from the creator-linked distribution page, so this note does not link a download.

Who it’s for

This is for players who want the Emerald route and story structure disrupted at the battle level rather than replaced with a new region. Gym Leaders and Elite Four members use the added types, and ordinary trainers have scaled randomised teams; it is a poor fit for someone looking for predictable vanilla-style encounters.

Version history

  • v1.6 — the version named in Kobazco’s official post, published 21 September 2023. The post was edited on 2 March 2026, but does not give a newer version number or change log.

Pokemon Too Many Types: common questions

Which ROM do I need?
The creator instructs players to apply the patch to a clean Pokémon Emerald (US) ROM. Do not use a modified ROM as the base.
What emulator should I use if the game crashes?
The official thread says it works best with mGBA and specifically recommends trying mGBA if crashes occur. It does not make a broader compatibility claim for other emulators.
Are the usual Hoenn trainer battles unchanged?
No. Gym Leaders and Elite Four members use the new types, while every non-Gym, non-rival trainer has a randomised team scaled to comparable strength.
Is there official documentation for the new matchups?
Yes. Kobazco's official thread links a public Too Many Types spreadsheet with tabs for the Dex, Type Chart, Boss Fights and Moves.
Where should I download or discuss it?
Kobazco says the PokéCommunity thread and Alpharad Discord are the only official sources. The thread also links the Too Many Projects Discord for discussion, but says not to use it for technical-support requests.
